Religious publishers, like their secular counterparts, wouldn't
miss a chance to release new titles around a major event. Here is a
sampling of books targeting the the Jewish High Holy Days, which
begin tomorrow at sundown, and Pope John Paul II's visit to New York
and Baltimore from Oct. 4 to 8. Other fall titles include a
controversial translation of the New Testament and works that explore
a popular theme in comparative religion: the parallel ministries of
Christ and the Buddha.
DOWN-TO-EARTH JUDAISM: FOOD, MONEY, SEX AND THE REST OF LIFE, by
Arthur Was kow. (New York: Morrow. $25. 406 pp.) Many Jews observe
major religious holidays, but most don't keep kosher. That's a
