MIAMI -- Elton Tyler never knew for sure. Some days seemed so
normal. His mother, Eleanor, would be home, along with other family
members. Brothers. Sisters. Aunts. Uncles. Grandparents.
"As many as 12 of us," Tyler was saying yesterday with a smile as
he and his University of Miami teammates prepared for their NCAA
first-round East Regional game against Lafayette Friday night at the
FleetCenter. "All living in a three-bedroom apartment."
Some days Eleanor would be there when Tyler came home. Some days
she wouldn't. Elton's father, Elton Elmore, was just as elusive,
moving in and out of his son's life.
