NEW ORLEANS -- He lived here for less than six months and has
been gone for 126 years, but Edgar Degas will make a triumphant
return this spring at a New Orleans Museum of Art exhibition to
highlight "Francofete," an observance accentuating Louisiana's French
connection.
The only French Impressionist to travel to the United States,
Degas visited relatives in New Orleans during the winter of 1873. He
was 38, and his talent was still several years from being recognized.
Of his 22 works traced to this period, 17 New Orleans scenes will be
on display along with two dozen other of his pieces. No art show has
generated this much anticipation in the region since Monet's water
lillies made a stop ...
