Article: Community banks seek spoils of merger

Community banks in the North Weekly region have launched an aggressive push to persuade the US Justice Department and state banking regulators to let them bid on branches, ATMs, and other assets the Fleet Financial Group Inc. and BankBoston Corp. must sell as a condition of their proposed merger.

Backed by industry trade associations and consumer groups, area bankers are lobbying local congressmen, state officials, business organizations, and others to press their case: Community banks deserve a fair shot at bidding on at least a portion of the estimated $13 billion in assets up for grabs, perhaps as early as June.
