Fleet Financial Group yesterday became a national sponsor of Major League Baseball, announcing an agreement said to be worth $4 million to $6 million over three years.

It is the first such national marketing deal between a bank and any of the four major sports leagues, officials and observers said.

Unlike their cousins in the more nationally based financial services and insurance industries, banks -- traditionally regional or local entities -- have not pursued national sports sponsorships.
