Most Americans know something of General Douglas MacArthur. His
line "I shall return" is chiseled into the national consciousness, as
is his flamboyant image in braided cap smoking his outsized corncob
pipe. MacArthur himself was outsized, literally and figuratively, a

in three major wars and battled his commanders-in-chief, notably FDR
