Article: Diet pill maker sues Channel 5 over news story

The makers of Metabolife, a diet pill that was the subject of two WCVB-TV (Ch. 5) news reports earlier this month, filed suit against the TV station yesterday in a California court, alleging that the station "knowingly aired false statements" about the safety of its product.

The company is also suing consumer reporter Susan Wornick, Boston physician Dr. George Blackburn and Hearst-Argyle Corp., the company that owns Channel 5, for defamation, slander, trade libel, and intentional and negligent interference with prospective economic advantage, according to Metabolife spokesman Tony Knight.
