Institutions of higher education spent $31 billion on information technology products and services in 1998.

According to International Data Corp., the availability of new technologies, along with the changing needs of students and shifting missions of colleges, is responsible for the boom. IDC predicts spending on communications products and services will increase the fastest, reaching $693 million by 2003.

Computer training will increase at the second-fastest rate, reaching $339 million by 2003.
