There was pandemonium here today as Virginia Tech moved into first
place in the Big East Conference with a 31-7 victory over 20th-
ranked Syracuse. The win leaves the Hokies (7-2, 5-1) with conference
doormat Temple (1-8) as the only obstacle to clinching at least a tie
for the Big East title. The Hokies play the Owls on Saturday at RFK
Stadium.
Fans from a crowd of 51,239, the eighth largest in Lane Stadium
history, stormed the field and sent the goalposts rocking -- and
falling -- as the Hokies clinched a third consecutive bowl berth for
the first time in school history. The victory also extended the
