Major League Baseball has another labor dispute on its hands.
This time it is the umpires who are threatening to walk off the job
Sept. 2 unless their demands are met.
The job action by the umpires yesterday in a meeting in
Philadelphia comes in protest of a July 2 ruling by National League
president Len Coleman against veteran umpire Tom Hallion. There are
68 umpires under contract, and 57 have apparently agreed to a
strategy of skipping the final 4 1/2 weeks of the season. By mutual
agreement, umpires cannot go on strike. Resignation would kick in
another option: severance pay.
Hallion was given a three-day suspension by Coleman, believed to
be the first ever, for bumping Colorado catcher ...
