BAR HARBOR, Maine - For years now, up and down the coast of New
England, cities have been fighting to be a part of the booming cruise-
ship market. Lines like Holland-America, Princess, and others carry
well-heeled passengers waiting for an opportunity to sample the local
cuisine or stock up on gifts.
But here, the state is paying $20,000 to study another kind of
problem: What to do when so many cruise ships come that residents
feel like they are drowning in tourists?
"We're looking for ways to better manage these cruise ship
visits," said Dana Reed, the Bar Harbor town manager. "We need to
minimize the problems in town. We're just getting too much traffic."
