Matt refused to eat his oatmeal at breakfast the other day. "It's
disgusting! I won't put a single molecule of that stuff in my mouth!"
"You think you're so smart," said Matt's sister. "What's a
molecule?"
"Um, it's something really, really small -- " Matt said. But he
didn't sound too sure about it.
"I learned in science that molecules are made of atoms," his
sister said. "Will you eat an atom of oatmeal?"
"No way!" Matt said. "I want waffles."
"You'll have waffles tomorrow," Matt's mom said. "Time to catch
the bus!" That ended the science discussion for the morning.
When Matt got to school, he found himself wondering about what
