HONG KONG - Hong Kong has long been the destination where Occident
meets Orient, where chopsticks sit alongside English tea and scones.
But can it also be the place where Mickey Mouse meets Chairman Mao?
The Hong Kong government and Walt Disney Co. are expected to
announce tomorrow a deal to build the first Disney theme park in
China, here in the former British colony that was returned to Chinese
rule two years ago.
If the deal goes through after months of intense and secret
negotiations, it could be a boon for both sides. Disney, famous for
bargaining ruthlessly for tax breaks and incentives, is expected to
win a multibillion-dollar land deal and access to the disposable
