Harvard Pilgrim Health Care is on the verge of selling its Rhode
Island health centers, a move that will help the region's largest
health maintenance organization walk away debt-free from its
financially troubled Rhode Island business, according to senior
executives at the Brookline-based HMO.
The most likely buyer of Harvard Pilgrim's five health centers is
Lifespan Inc., the Ocean State's largest hospital group and the owner
of Boston-based New England Medical Center, sources at both firms
confirmed. An agreement could be reached as soon as next week,
sources said.
