Several hundred feet below 1st Lt. Nicolas Tete's U.N. observation post on a hill above Sarajevo, a small alley meanders between two drab apartment buildings.

On one side, several Serb girls were jumping rope, reveling in Sarajevo's Indian summer. Across the alley, Muslim boys were deep into a soccer game.

Two trenches, one for Muslim forces, one for Serbs, run along the alley, Tete pointed out. "That's where their fathers are spending the day," said the young French officer as the children's carefree voices reached his post. "It's crazy. And what's going to happen when there's peace?"
