Article: SATELLITE TV TO SHOW LOCAL CHANNELS

Satellite television systems can begin providing subscribers with local channels, boosting their ability to compete with cable TV, under legislation that President Clinton signed into law yesterday.

Echostar's Dish Network service planned to begin beaming six Boston stations to area subscribers as soon as late last night or this morning as part of a 13-city nationwide rollout of local channels.

Its bigger rival, DirecTV, which has nearly two-thirds of the 11 million US digital-dish customers, planned a quick rollout to seven US cities but had no immediate plans for Boston.
