Those darn cats! To the allergic and asthmatic, cats are not the
appealing fur balls adored by many. Rather, they are endless sources
of irritating substances that trigger fits of itching eyes, sneezing,
and wheezing, making even a brief visit to a cat-occupied home an
unpleasant experience for some sufferers.
Almost any furry pet can trigger allergies, but cats are the worst
offenders -- more troublesome than dogs, guinea pigs, hamsters, or
gerbils, specialists say. About one in every seven people is allergic
to cats, and perhaps 20 or 30 percent of people with asthma say they
are bothered by felines.
