How many times did your mother ask you that question when you were growing up? Maybe she still asks you. My mother asks, occasionally. Force of habit. At least I think it's force of habit. Maybe she thinks I still need to be reminded.

Mothers may be wrong about some things, but they're right about the importance of washing your hands. So get in there and scrub. That means you, kid. And don't forget to wash the backs of your hands, because germs are lurking everywhere, poised to do their worst, and their worst is very bad indeed.

Germs. The word alone used to scare us. We've lost our fear. We've put our faith in antibiotics. But antibiotics aren't a sure cure ...
