Daniqua Springer-O'Neal is a "Black Nativity" baby. Her parents,
Desiree Springer-O'Neal and Stephen O'Neal, met working on the annual
Boston production of the Langston Hughes gospel opera. When Daniqua
was just a babe in swaddling clothes herself, not yet 3 months old,
she had her stage debut, playing the baby Jesus. Now 10, she sings in
the chorus.
"I love to sing about God," Daniqua declares. She's been in the
chorus since she was 6. "It was scary at first, but it's not hard to
remember. I've got it in my head now."
Daniqua is one of scores of children growing up as part of the
