BOCA RATON, Fla. - When the railroad was brought to South Florida
more than 100 years ago, Boca Raton attracted a small number of
farmers who sought a living nurturing cash crops such as bananas and
pineapples from the area's sandy, scrubby soil. As the new millennium
approaches, Boca Raton has become a premier destination, attracting
many New Englanders seeking the beaches and golf courses of Florida's
gold coast.
More than anything else, the creativity of eccentric architect
Addison Mizner was responsible for this change. He designed and
built the luxurious Cloister Inn, now known as the Boca Raton Resort
& Club.
