NEW YORK - Janet Maslin and Vincent Canby were on their way to an
early screening of "The Godfather Part III." The crowd outside the
theater was filled with excitement. Maslin, who would be reviewing
the film for The New York Times, confessed to Canby that she was,
too. Her Times colleague replied, "Actually, I'd rather be excited on
the way out."
Excitement on the way out might double as a description of
Maslin's life these days. In September, after nearly three decades of
reviewing movies for a living, 22 of those years at the Times, and
the last 6 as the paper's senior critic, she announced that she'd
be leaving at the end of the year.
