Fidelity Investments lost two top executives yesterday and promoted a third, in a sudden reshuffle that reflects efforts by the mutual fund giant to find a stronger footing in a brutally competitive investment world increasingly dominated by the Internet.

J. Gary Burkhead, who headed two of Fidelity's largest and most challenging areas - retail fund sales and brokerage operations - said he was retiring after a tumultuous 17-year career at the Boston fund giant.
