ROME - In Italy, one learns quickly that pizza is not some crusty
old stereotype or movie-set prop - it's sustenance.
Some 7 million pizzas are consumed each day here, nearly a pie a
week for every person. That's not counting the healthy helpings of
the ready-made sliced variety.
As with food in general, pizza is a regular topic of conversation,
with Italians known to spend entire meals dueling over their most
memorable eating experiences. But while the "best pizza in town"
debate rages on, there is near unanimous consent that it always
tastes better when fired up in a wood-burning oven.
