Programs of 20th-century music were traditionally box-office
poison - during the 20th century. Superstar violinist Anne-Sophie
Mutter is concentrating on 20th-century music this season and has an
easy answer for people who might be terrified at the prospect: "It is
the last century already, so what's the problem?"
In a recent New York mini-festival, Mutter played eight concerts,
with five different programs, all devoted to 20th-century music for
violin - she calls it her "Back to the Future Proj ect." Her
BankBoston Celebrity Series recital in Symphony Hall Friday night
will present four 20th-century works, each from a different decade -
the Respighi Sonata (1917), Ravel's "Tzigane" ...
