Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates said yesterday it will accept
patients insured by Blue Cross starting April 1, a development that
could hurt Blue Cross's struggling competitor, Harvard Pilgrim Health
Care.
The four-year contract signed Monday night is a major step forward
for Harvard Vanguard's 550 doctors, who broke off from Harvard
Pilgrim two years ago and have been struggling to achieve
independence ever since.
Harvard Vanguard treats nearly one in 10 Greater Boston residents,
making it the state's largest group practice. But it also has been
considered vulnerable because 93 percent of its 300,000 patients are
insured by Harvard Pilgrim, which was forced into state receivership
