DEAR BETH
I read your column on STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) and
think it's a good thing you often talk about them. You should include
in your column that HPV (human papilloma virus) can be transmitted
even when condoms are used, as the virus can be present in areas not
covered by a condom (the same is true with herpes). Also, certain
strains of HPV are symptomless and can cause cervical cancer. I think
most people feel they are protected from STDs when they use a condom.
This is not the case with HPV, as I have, sadly, found out.
