Charitable gifts to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center fell off
last year even as donations to the city's other major teaching
hospitals grew, a decline attributed to normal fund-raising cycles,
the hospital's troubled merger, and shifting patterns of Jewish
philanthropy.
Beth Israel Deaconess, which suffered a record operating loss last
year, has long been known as a fund-raising force in Boston. It has
attracted especially strong support throughout its history from the
city's Jewish community, which opened the former Beth Israel Hospital
in 1916 when waves of Jewish immigrants arrived in the city.
