Katie Lucas didn't know what to expect when she was strapped to a
motorized table at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and tilted
nearly upright.
"Within five minutes, I started having symptoms. I was a little
queasy, starting seeing light spots, felt lightheaded and wasn't
thinking clearly. I had a headache and felt sleepy," she recalled.
The symptoms were similar to those of chronic fatigue syndrome, a
disabling condition that had forced the 34-year-old woman to leave
work as a New York financial analyst for a homebound life in
Richmond.
