Article: `SLOPPINESS' COULD GROUND ALASKA AIRLINES FAA CITES POOR RECORD-KEEPING, MAINTENANCE OVERSIGHT

Citing about 150 instances of "sloppiness" in record-keeping and maintenance oversight at Alaska Airlines, Federal Aviation Administration officials said yesterday they are prepared to prohibit the airline from performing major maintenance work on its own planes.

Unless the Seattle-based airline improves its maintenance system and oversight, the prohibition could lead to the grounding of Alaska Airlines' 89-plane fleet, one aircraft at a time, as the planes are scheduled to receive heavy maintenance.
