Nominations for the 1995 National Book Award were dealt out
yesterday in New York -- five for fiction, five for nonfiction and
five for poetry. Winners will be announced Nov. 15 at an awards
dinner at which biographer David McCullough will also receive the
National Book Foundation Medal for his contribution to American
letters.
"I'm astounded and thrilled and elated," McCullough said from his
home on Martha's Vineyard, Mass. "I just hope it doesn't mean it's a
lifetime achievement award."
What it means is a bronze plaque and a $10,000 check signed by the
Reader's Digest Association.
McCullough has written six history books, including biographies of
Harry Truman and the young Theodore ...
