New Nieman Foundation curator Robert Giles said yesterday that he
intends to build on his predecessor Bill Kovach's "wonderful efforts
to elevate the standards of journalism" as he takes the reins at the
nation's most prestigious journalism fellowship program.
Giles, 67, a senior vice president at the Freedom Forum, was
named curator yesterday. The announcement by Harvard University
followed a bruising process that included a lobbying campaign by
unions angered by what they described as Giles's divisive role in the
Detroit newspaper strike when he was editor and publisher of The
