CHELSEA - The City Council will try to break a stalemate over the
selection of a new city manager tomorrow even as it prepares for the
possibility of having to reopen the search process.
Last week, the 11-member council remained deadlocked over two
candidates for the position: Jay Ash, the city's planning and
development director, and former Springfield mayor Robert T. Markel.
In 10 rounds of voting over three meetings, six councilors voted each
time for Ash and five for Markel. The city charter requires seven
votes for the hiring of a manager.
Councilors will vote again on the selection at a special meeting
at 7 p.m. tomorrow.
