The University of Southern California's sports publicity
department has made it clear that the school does not want to be
referred to as "Southern Cal." Now, after the Trojans' 38-10 loss to
Notre Dame today, there's something else you shouldn't call them:
national championship contenders.
USC (that's deemed acceptable, as is So. California and Troy) saw
its undefeated record slip to 6-1 before 59,075 on a cold, damp
afternoon at Notre Dame Stadium, and its No. 5 national ranking
surely will drop as well. The Trojans are 0-12-1 in their past 13
games against Notre Dame. Notre Dame (6-2), ranked 17th, needs to be
in the top 10 to guarantee a spot in one of the Bowl Alliance games,
