The odds seemed insurmountable. New Hampshire trailed undefeated
Delaware by 28 points on the road with time running out and playoff
chances slipping away.
"I told everyone that if we were going down, we were going down
fighting," said UNH coach Sean McDonnell. "I was saying all those
cliches that football coaches say and looking for a sign of life on
our team."
The Wildcats (6-3, 4-3 Atlantic 10) got two quick touchdowns
before the end of the third quarter to close the gap to 31-17, then
rallied to tie the game and force overtime, where quarterback Ryan
Day found Walpole's Brian Mallette from 7 yards out and Beverly's
Shawn MacLean added the extra point for a thrilling 45-44 win.
