On the surface, it's just a typical pharmacy, stocked with shelves
of cold medicine, cough drops, and greeting cards.
But to Sister Virginia Morrison, who was on hand at yesterday's
official opening of the new CVS Pharmacy in Grove Hall's long-
awaited "Mecca Mall," the harsh fluorescent lights and big red
letters glow like a beacon of hope.
Morrison's old enough to know what it's like to see neighborhood
businesses suddenly disappear. She watched as merchants along Blue
Hill Avenue boarded up their storefronts and fled to the suburbs
following the racial riots of the 1960s. And she remembers the
onslaught of gang activity in the 1970s. And the high crime and drugs
in the 1980s.
