Even Rep. John R. Kasich (R-Ohio), who never met a debate he
didn't like, had had enough. For two hours he had pitched his
reconciliation bill before the House Rules Committee, and now that it
was over, he was somewhat awestruck.
"Even I'm tired of hearing me," he said. "Did you ever think John
Kasich would say that?"
Hour after hour yesterday, first Kasich, then a parade of 57 other
House members made the pilgrimage to the Capitol's third floor to
visit the Rules Committee and its tiny conference room.
Their mission: try to persuade nine Republicans and four Democrats
to include their amendments in the giant budget-balancing bill that
reached the House floor last night.
