Article: SHOWING THE PUBLIC PUBLICLY FUNDED ART

Back in the 1980s, work by winners of the Mas sa chu setts Cultural Council's visual arts grants was regularly exhibited by the Artists Foundation. In the 1990s the vigor - and the funding - for both state-supported institutions took a dive and these exhibitions largely disappeared. Since the grants are public money - they've increased this year from $7,500 to $12,500, with fi nal ists' awards remaining at $1,000 - you'd think every effort would be made to show the public what work won. A council spokesperson says the agency does want to increase the number of artists' exhibitions it sponsors as part of an overall plan to help artists market their work.
