BACK IN THE DEPRESSION, a Civilian Conservation Corps building
crew left Massachusetts with a mountaintop lodge to rival anything in
the White Mountains - the handsome stone Bascom Lodge at the summit
of Mount Greylock in the Berkshires. Its bunkrooms, dining hall,
porch, and fireplaced living room have been a haven for both day
hikers and Appalachian Trail through-hikers, not to mention visitors
who arrive on the summit's paved road.
Sadly, the lodge has been a victim of the state's long-term
underfunding of its parks system, the seventh largest in the nation.
The building, which is on the National Register of Historic Places,
badly needs new sewer and water systems, as well as new windows ...
