Article: CITY RESIDENTS, WORKERS DON'T NEED CARS

As a longtime resident of Boston, I have read with some amusement the recent spate of letters complaining about the lack of parking spaces and the enforcement of parking laws in "selected" neighborhoods in Boston. When people living in the city cannot find a legal parking spot, they apparently assume that the problem is that there is not enough parking available. When they get a ticket, they assume that they are being persecuted.

The alternative conclusions are that there are too many cars, and parking enforcement is a fact of life.

The solution to this problem is not to build more parking garages and to stop enforcing the traffic laws, but rather for people who live and work in the city to ...
