In the land of the bean and the cod where the locals get excited
about the color of their chowder, it is sometimes hard to believe
that doughnuts can inspire a cult.
But Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc. seems to have started one. When
its first stores opened in Los Angeles, Madonna was reportedly wowed.
And Wall Street has been equally smitten.
At a time when many dot-coms were canceling their initial public
stock offerings, North Carolina-based Krispy Kreme had the second-
best-performing IPO of 2000.
Now Krispy Kreme is coming to New England to take on Randolph-
based Dunkin' Donuts. The chains may sell some of the same products.
They both may have flunked spelling. But they have very different ...
