FORT MYERS, Fla. - Nomar Garciaparra yesterday matter-of-factly
acknowledged the inevitability of surgery on his right wrist, but the
Red Sox shortstop said he was holding off on a decision until he
spoke with team doctor Bill Morgan and other club officials.
Garciaparra indicated that Morgan, a hand specialist, will be his
likely choice to perform the surgery when he makes the decision to
proceed. He said surgery would keep him out a minimum of six weeks,
but was reluctant to speculate how much more time would be needed
before he returned to action. General manager Dan Duquette said last
week that Garciaparra would be out 10-16 weeks; other doctors have
suggested a range of 8-10 weeks.
