I was planning to drive north for vacation, and so it seemed like
an appropriate time to try out Rand McNally's TripMaker, software on
CD-ROM that allows you to create travel routes between destinations
in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The software works. But despite its power and sophistication, some
real limitations make it a less-than-ideal traveling companion. Using
it, in fact, I was reminded of something we often forget in this age
of computer hype.
Computers and software are tools. In deciding to replace one tool
with another, we ought to ask whether the new tool really is better,
whether it's cheaper and easier to use, whether it really does allow
us to do more.
