I don't do fast food; as a restaurant critic, I'm thankfully
spared that in my job description. But when I brought home Eric
Schlosser's "Fast Food Nation" to look it over, both my husband and
my teenage son immediately picked it up and started to read.
No wonder, I decided, as I got into it. Schlosser, an award-
winning journalist and a contributing editor for The Atlantic
Monthly, begins with the Big Mac and fries, and spins out a tale that
envelops most of current American life.
The subtitle, "The Dark Side of the All-American Meal," pretty
much gives away his conclusion. But getting there is still
fascinating, sometimes perversely so. His style combines folksy
