Article: NAPSTER AIMS TO BLOCK SOME MUSIC SWAPS

Napster plans to start filtering copyrighted songs as soon as this weekend, according to statements made by the company in a California courtroom yesterday.

At a hearing before US District Judge Marilyn Hall Patel, Napster attorney David Boies announced that the company was working furiously to implement a screening system that would block users from trading specific pirated music files.

Among the first files to be blocked, presumably, will be a list of 5,600 songs submitted to Napster by the major record labels. Songs by prominent Napster critics, including heavy metal band Metallica and rap artist Dr. Dre, also are likely to be among the first songs filtered.
