BELGRADE - Slobodan Milosevic, the man behind a decade of war-
mongering in the Balkans, was behind bars yesterday after he was
ordered held in jail for 30 days while prosecutors build a corruption
case against him.
His lawyer acknowledged that the former Yugoslav leader may not
see the outside of Belgrade Central Prison for months if he is held
for trial after a month's detention, as is likely.
Accused of using his position to enrich himself and his cronies,
Milosevic, 59, pleaded not guilty before a judge in a closed-door
hearing in a drab jailhouse in the Yugoslav capital, where he had
waged wars, defied the international community, and driven his
country into isolation and economic ...
