Her 19-year-old heart ached with loneliness as Maria DaRosa walked
the dingy streets of Boston's South End searching for work. A baby in
her belly, no money in her pocket, and no family, friends, or
education to lean on, her future looked as bleak as the empty walls
in her one-bedroom apartment.
"I didn't have my citizenship at the time," DaRosa said. "I
couldn't even see a future. I was alone."
Her life took a fateful turn when she called a South End social
service agency looking for help and met Frieda Garcia, community
leader, activist, and surrogate mother to people like DaRosa who have
little going for them.
