South African transport workers staged a wildcat strike today that
snarled air travel nationwide to protest government plans to
privatize state companies, including South African Airways.
The strike, by 40,000 workers of the South African Railways and
Harbor Workers' Union, was interpreted as a sign of growing discord
between the ruling African National Congress and the labor unions
that helped it sweep to power in the country's first all-races
elections last year.
The walkout, which included air travel workers, stranded 3,000
passengers on 21 domestic flights and threatened to affect
