Article: GRADUATE STUDENT EMPLOYEES SPEAK OUT ON SALARIES CONTINUING-EDUCATION PAY DISCREPANCY CITED

Benjamin Balthaser spent six semesters over a number of school years teaching freshman composition at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. And he taught the course again this summer.

In both cases, the fourth-year English graduate student said he devoted extensive time to classroom preparation and grading papers.

But during the school year, Balthaser made about $6,000 a semester, including benefits. This summer, he'll take home less than half that sum - and he still has to pay for health insurance.

The reason: Balthaser taught freshman composition this summer through the school's continuing education program.
