Benjamin Balthaser spent six semesters over a number of school
years teaching freshman composition at the University of
Massachusetts in Amherst. And he taught the course again this
summer.
In both cases, the fourth-year English graduate student said he
devoted extensive time to classroom preparation and grading papers.
But during the school year, Balthaser made about $6,000 a
semester, including benefits. This summer, he'll take home less than
half that sum - and he still has to pay for health insurance.
The reason: Balthaser taught freshman composition this summer
through the school's continuing education program.
