Franklin Herman ducked into the men's room outside the Greene Gym
at the Fernald Center in Waltham, saying, "Be back in a minute, after
I change."
A visitor looked incredulous. Change? For what? After all, this is
the Waltham Table Tennis Club.
"In 10 minutes," promised Herman, "I'll be dripping with sweat."
True to his word, after 15 minutes of volleying with his playing
partner, the 48-year-old Sutton resident looked like he'd had nearly
as good a workout with his paddle as he would with a tennis racket.
Welcome to the sport of table tennis, which, when played
seriously, is a very competitive endeavor.
