The move by developers to increase residential space at Fan Pier - while scrapping plans for a secondary hotel - should not only help the marketing of the land but the financing as well, which developers and lenders say is key in this stale economic market.

Initial plans from the Pritzker family called for 300 residential units on the sprawling South Boston parcel overlooking the harbor, but the number has more than doubled, to 675, in final plans filed with the state this week.
